Rambo is one of Ohura's newest residents. His lifestyle choices often see him awake for three or four days without sleep. Over this period, his creativity is in overdrive, and you see his homemade art sculptures pop all over his property — such a beautiful soul.

Ross has lived in a shed and a house bus in Ohura since the mid-1980s He has had a few stints in Jail over the years for growing cannabis, but he likes to refer to himself as a "retired horticulturist" these days.

Norm has hardly any belongings and no form of transport. Yet, the locals rallied around him and his family, helping him with their basic needs. He was happy and proud to be photographed with some of his children.

John is sitting, reading his book, and listening to the trickle of water running down his homemade water feature. He admitted to feeling happy as he had six gins before breakfast. John and his wife own the local secondhand shop that is hardly ever open.

Sandra's tattooed body tells a story of her life and the hardship she has endured. She has lived a very basic existence in an old house truck for over ten years. Sandra originally comes from Whanganui and has had various jobs over the year, including being a madam of a local massage parlour.

Dennis lives with his wife, Bonita, on Kiwi street in Ohura. In his earlier life, he was a member of the Hells Angels. Here he is in the banquet room of his house, where he keeps his pet rabbit.

Jim moved to Ohura to retire and lives in a one-bedroom cabin with his brother Frank. Originally from Hamilton, Jim had many different jobs over the years, his last being a taxi driver. He is a real dog lover and did a bit of opossum hunting for beer money.

Julie is a longtime resident of Ohura. She and her husband, Nial, are very private and don't take too kindly to visitors. They live a simple life and still cook on an old fashion coal range.

Fred loves to dance and is known to stop on the side of the road and break out a dance move or two. He has had his name tattooed on the inside of his lip for 45 years due to drinking. Living in a house without power has challenged Fred, but he's up for it. A beautiful man whose life goal now is to make people smile.

Bing was living without power at the time of this photograph. It took three visits before the time was right to photograph Bing; he was very cautious and guarded.

David is a paramedic and lives next door to his mother, Hazel. Living a bachelor's life, he's a dog lover and has a passion for horses. David is a man of few words.

Hazel has lived most of her 93 years of life living in Ohura. You can still see her riding around town on her push bike, and she is the town's justice of the peace — a beautiful person with a warm smile.
